La Fleur Gallery - Clarence.

In December 2011 my daughter and I made a quick visit to Clarence.

A new gallery opened its doors to the public and I am so proud to

exhibit my artwork in this lovely gallery.

We stayed in this flat for the time. In the hart of Clarence ,

among trees and restaurants with a awesome view of the mountains.

The lady holding the parcel is the one that bought my painting.

My first sale in the gallery.

For me this story is the true Christmas love.....

The "W" in Christmas

Each December, I vowed to make Christmas a calm and peaceful experience.

I had cut back on nonessential obligations - extensive card writing,
endless baking, decorating, and even overspending.

Yet still, I found myself exhausted, unable to appreciate the
precious family moments, and of course, the true meaning of
Christmas.

My son, Nicholas, was in kindergarten that year. It was an exciting
season for a six year old.

For weeks, he'd been memorizing songs for his school's "Winter Pageant."

I didn't have the heart to tell him I'd be working the night of the
production. Unwilling to miss his shining moment, I spoke with his
teacher. She assured me there'd be a dress rehearsal the morning of the
presentation.

All parents unable to attend that evening were welcome to come then.

Fortunately, Nicholas seemed happy with the compromise.

So, the morning of the dress rehearsal, I filed in ten minutes
early, found a spot on the cafeteria floor and sat down. Around the room, I saw several other parents quietly scampering to their seats.

As I waited, the students were led into the room. Each class, accompanied by their teacher, sat cross-legged on the floor. Then, each group, one by one, rose to perform their song.

Because the public school system had long stopped referring to the
holiday as "Christmas," I didn't expect anything other than fun, commercial entertainment songs of reindeer, Santa Claus, snowflakes and good cheer.

So, when my son's class rose to sing, "Christmas Love," I was slightly taken aback by its bold title.

Nicholas was aglow, as were all of his classmates, adorned in fuzzy mittens, red sweaters, and bright snowcaps upon their heads.

Those in the front row- center stage - held up large letters, one by one, to spell out the title of the song.

As the class would sing "C is for Christmas," a child would hold up the
letter C. Then, "H is for Happy," and on and on, until each child holding up his portion had presented the complete message, "Christmas Love."

The performance was going smoothly, until suddenly, we noticed her; a
small, quiet, girl in the front row holding the letter "M" upside down - totally unaware her letter "M" appeared as a "W".

The audience of 1st through 6th graders snickered at this little one's mistake. But she had no idea they were laughing at her, so she stood tall, proudly holding her "W".

Although many teachers tried to shush the children, the laughter continued until the last letter was raised, and we all saw it together.

A hush came over the audience and eyes began to widen.

In that instant, we understood the reason we were there, why we celebrated the holiday in the first place, why even in the chaos, there was a purpose for our festivities.

For when the last letter was held high, the message read loud and clear:

"C H R I S T W A S L O V E"

Firsts and lasts...

Joane had her last day of school (yesterday)

We always make special notes every time our kids had a first.
First smile, first teeth, first steps, first day of school, first choir performance, we have a lifetime of firsts and I've celebrated everyone.
But along the way we forget something.. we forget to mark their lasts.
One day they do something for the last time, catching butterflies, baking mud cakes, climbing trees..last day of school.
Their is always a last and it passes us by ,because we never know when it would be the last.
Our children's growing-up years were full of lasts, and we never knew it.

'I watched you grow and never noticed seasons as they passed.
I wish I could have frozen time, to hold on to your lasts.
For come tomorrow life will never be the same.."

Last time I fed them a bottle, last time they coloured a picture for the refrigerator door..last time they need us to drive them somewhere or last time they ask advice about romance..
Would I have made a special note or held you tighter if I'd known it was the last time I held you on my lap the first day of school...

A cup of tea

I often wondered why I love to paint tea cups, not because I love all the patterns or because I love drinking tea or because I LOVE COLLECTING THEM . I call them my 'bread and butter' range , for a long time I only sold cup paintings. A friend ( client ) once said they were my ' claim to fame'. Well hope that happens soon...

The real, genuine reason I paint cups is perhaps something I read in a rationale my daughter Joane wrote for her grade 12 art exam yesterday, the reality blew a ice cold wind across my face...

'Home, according to Funk & Wagnalls standard dictionary,
is one's fixed place of abode ;
the family residence;
a house on the other hand according to the same dictionary means,
a building intended for human habitation, especially one used as the residence of a family or single tenant.
To expand on the meaning of the word house,
the merits student Encyclopedia states that a house is a building that provides a home for one or more families and that it's main purpose is to provide shelter and other purposes to it's residents.

But what does Home mean to me?
This project would provide me with simple definition of what a home is to me and my close family. In order to do so I will combine both meanings of the words home and house to aid me in my discovery.
I have taken the fact that I have moved seven times in my life and the longest I have lived in a house is five years and counting...
Thus a family home is a foreign concept to me. I don't have a home which walls have seen me grow up and have shared my aches, pains and laughter. A home which I can bring my own children home to and say: 'look, under that tree I played teacher, teacher' or ' that is where I crashed into on my first driving lesson with my dad' but what do I have, I have memories captured on glossy paper with ink: Photographs .
My family may not have a structured place filled with a lifetime of memories but we have grown up with family experiences and traditions which we tag along with us where ever we go; be it a vacation home or foreign country.
Where ever we may go , we make it feel like home, by talking about our memories and performing daily things.
If we feel down, come home from school or work we have one simple wish; " Lets make some tea".
One such tradition that has followed us where ever we go is the art of making tea.
In my family tea has become a symbol of comfort, it has become part of being at home, a medium through which we make time for each other to express how we feel and how our day has been.
You may even call us teapots for we drink so much tea.

My mom has even started a collection of antique teacups which was inspired by my grandmothers own collection of antique teacups, she even paints teacups.
Another thing which we do to make us feel at home is in which ever house we live in we make the garden beautiful. We even have a truck move plants with us from house to house. We have these two cycads which have become like family to us. They have been planted and moved and then replanted in each house that we have lived in. They are so dear to us for they originally come from my grandparents Sugarcane farm which was lost once my grandfather passed away. To my mother these cycads are her connection to the farm where she grew up on.
Every time her mother ( my grandmother ) comes to visit us from Kwa - zulu Natal, she brings along saplings of all sorts of flowers and we spend the entire first day of her arrival planting those plants into our garden and then we enjoy a warm cup of tea afterwards.... by Joane Burger
